Engineers #1 to #3, pre-seed to Series A
Founding Engineer Recruiters for AI Startups in NYC
We help AI startup founders in New York City hire founding engineers who can own early product development, make technical decisions and build while requirements are still changing.

How we assess
How we vet a founding engineer before you meet them
Every introduction comes with our read on the candidate: what we checked, what we found and what your technical interview should test.
01
Built it themselves
We separate personal ownership from team output. What did they ship with their own hands, and which calls did they make? Open source and side projects count.
02
Shipped while scope changed
Prototypes that became products, with requirements that moved every week. We look for engineers who kept shipping, kept it simple and can tell you what they cut.
03
Explains the trade-offs
Your first engineer will make architecture calls you have to trust. We test that they can explain one plainly before you spend an hour on them.
04
Grew fast around strong people
We look at who they learned from and how fast their scope grew. Two years from first commit to owning the stack says more than a senior title held for five.
Personal ownership

Comp and equity fit
Motivation and timing

Is a founding engineer the same as a technical co-founder?
No. A technical co-founder shares ownership of the company and sets its direction with the other founders, while a founding engineer is an early hire who builds the product. Founding engineers own the architecture and the first technical decisions, and usually join with meaningful equity, though well below a co-founder's share.
Should our first hire be a generalist or an AI specialist?
Hire a generalist if your bottleneck is turning a prototype into a working product, and a founding AI engineer if model quality or evaluation is what's holding you back. If it's not clear which, we help you decide before the search starts.
What should a founding engineer own in the first 90 days?
A founding engineer should own the release your customers are waiting on, the core of the stack and the call on what gets built properly and what stays a prototype. Agreeing those three up front also tells us who to approach.
Do you recruit founding full-stack and founding backend engineers?
Yes, we recruit founding engineers with a full-stack or backend lean. Many first hires are stronger on one side, so we settle which side your product needs at the start of the search.
We're non-technical founders. How do we assess a founding engineer?
Use our write-up for what we checked and what to test, then bring in an engineer you trust for the technical round, such as an advisor or someone from your investors' network. Give them a real problem from your product. We can help you design that round.
Are we ready to hire a founding engineer?
Usually yes, if customers have confirmed the problem, you have a prototype or design partners, and you have the runway to pay someone properly through your next raise. If you're still testing whether anyone wants the product, a contractor or a technical co-founder may fit better.
How quickly will we see candidates?
We deliver exceptional candidate submissions within 24 hours, and for well-calibrated searches we can have candidates in process within the first few days, without compromising on the bar. Our last 3 hires averaged 17 days from submission to accepted offer.
We already have an in-house recruiter. Why use you?
Because the people you want usually aren't applying. Most of our clients already have founders, an internal talent team or both recruiting. We focus on the people they aren't reaching: we map the market and approach candidates who meet your real bar.
How much of the process do you own?
As much or as little as you need. At the simplest level, we source, qualify and close candidates. When we're embedded, we also help define profiles, calibrate pay, design interview processes, manage offers and advise founders on the close.
What if the search isn't working?
We tell you, fast. Because we map the market from the start, we can usually see whether the issue is sourcing, pay, location, the interview process or an unrealistic profile. We bring that data back and recalibrate instead of sending weaker candidates for weeks.
How do you charge?
We work retained, success-based or embedded, and agree everything upfront with no hidden fees. For individual searches, we offer retained or success-based terms. Higher-volume clients usually work with us embedded, for a monthly fee plus a reduced success fee. Placements are backed by a 60-day placement guarantee.
