Engineers who pick what to build, then build it
Product Engineer Recruiters for AI Startups in New York
A product engineer turns a user conversation into a shipped feature and checks the numbers after. We find them for New York City AI startups and test the calls they made, from the user problem to the result.

At a glance
The product engineers we find
Product engineers are good at two jobs, which makes them hard to find. Many of the best come from early startups, growth teams or their own company.

How we assess
Product engineers judged by the calls they made
We ask product engineers for three decisions from recent work: something they built, something they dropped and what the numbers said after.
01
Talks to users
Product engineers should hear from users without a PM in the room. We ask how often that happened and for one conversation that changed what they shipped.
02
Chose what to build
We look for engineers who shaped the spec as well as the code, and we ask which requests they turned down and why.
03
Measured the outcome
Which metric they watched after a release, what it did and what they tried next when it didn't move.
04
Pulls their own numbers
Product engineers shouldn't wait on a data team to learn whether a feature worked. We check they can query usage data and set up a basic experiment on their own.

What is a product engineer?
A product engineer is a software engineer who is also responsible for whether a feature works for users. At an early AI startup, they often cover work a PM would do later: user calls, scoping and checking the numbers after release.
Should we hire a product engineer or a product manager first?
Hire the product engineer first while your team is small: they build what they decide, so nothing waits on a handoff. A product manager makes sense once there's a team whose time needs prioritizing.
How do you test product judgment before an interview?
We ask candidates to walk us through recent decisions: the problem, the options, what they chose and the result. Vague answers usually mean the decision wasn't theirs, and your team then tests their judgment against your own product.
Isn't a product engineer just a full-stack engineer?
Not quite: the technical skills overlap, since most product engineers work across the stack, but the job differs. A full-stack engineer builds what the team has decided, while a product engineer also helps decide it, talks to users and checks the result. If your founders want to keep every product call, a full-stack engineer may suit you better.
Our product runs on AI. What should a product engineer have done before?
They should have shipped features whose output can be wrong, slow or costly, and watched how users responded. They don't need to train models. We ask every candidate for an example.
What does a product engineer need from us in the first month?
Access to users, product data and the team's metrics, plus one product area that's clearly theirs. Strong product engineers ship something small in the first weeks and start shaping that area's roadmap soon after. Without users or data, the role turns into feature delivery.
How quickly will we see candidates?
We deliver exceptional candidate submissions within 24 hours, and for well-calibrated searches we can have candidates in process within the first few days, without compromising on the bar. Our last 3 hires averaged 17 days from submission to accepted offer.
We already have an in-house recruiter. Why use you?
Because the people you want usually aren't applying. Most of our clients already have founders, an internal talent team or both recruiting. We focus on the people they aren't reaching: we map the market and approach candidates who meet your real bar.
How much of the process do you own?
As much or as little as you need. At the simplest level, we source, qualify and close candidates. When we're embedded, we also help define profiles, calibrate pay, design interview processes, manage offers and advise founders on the close.
What if the search isn't working?
We tell you, fast. Because we map the market from the start, we can usually see whether the issue is sourcing, pay, location, the interview process or an unrealistic profile. We bring that data back and recalibrate instead of sending weaker candidates for weeks.
How do you charge?
We work retained, success-based or embedded, and agree everything upfront with no hidden fees. For individual searches, we offer retained or success-based terms. Higher-volume clients usually work with us embedded, for a monthly fee plus a reduced success fee. Placements are backed by a 60-day placement guarantee.
