For founders who still write every spec
Product Manager Recruiters for AI Startups in NYC
A good product manager can point to what changed because of them. For New York City AI startups, we find PMs who can name the metric they owned, the calls that moved it and the customers who shaped those calls.

How we assess
Metrics, trade-offs and customers: how we assess PMs
PM impact is easy to overstate, because every good outcome has several owners. We ask which metric was theirs, what they personally did to move it and what they'd do differently.
01
Owned an outcome
Which metric were they accountable for, and what moved while it was theirs? A PM who can't name one usually didn't own one.
02
Understands AI products
When the model was wrong, slow or too expensive, what did they do? And how did they decide what accuracy was acceptable at launch?
03
Makes hard calls
What they said no to, and how they got the team and the customer to accept it.
04
Stays close to customers
We ask who they spoke to last month, users or buyers, and for one roadmap change that came out of it. PMs who hear customers only through sales build the wrong thing.

When should a startup hire its first product manager?
Usually once you have several engineers and the founders can't keep up with customers, roadmap and specs at the same time. Until then, a product engineer who decides and builds is often the better hire.
What makes an AI product manager different?
An AI product manager knows how models fail and plans for it. They set up evals with engineering, decide what accuracy is acceptable at launch and plan around cost and latency. A strong PM without that background can learn it, but it takes time you may not have.
Should our first PM come from a big tech company?
A big tech PM is a good first hire only if they have also worked somewhere small or built a product early on. At big tech, PMs can lean on research, data and design teams you won't have yet, so we look for PMs who have done that work without that support.
Do we need a founding PM, a senior PM or a Head of Product?
With no PMs yet, you usually want a founding PM: hands-on, writing specs and talking to customers, with no team to manage. A senior PM owns one area of an existing product, and a Head of Product sets strategy and hires PMs. Hired too early, a Head of Product will want a team you don't need yet.
How technical should an AI product manager be?
Technical enough to read an eval report, question a cost estimate and work through trade-offs with engineers directly. They don't need to write production code. If you sell to developers, look for someone who has built with tools like yours.
How do founders hand product decisions to a new PM?
Agree before the PM starts which calls move to them and which stay with you, such as roadmap order, specs and pricing. Founders usually keep the vision and the biggest bets. We ask candidates how they have worked with founders who stayed close to the product.
How quickly will we see candidates?
We deliver exceptional candidate submissions within 24 hours, and for well-calibrated searches we can have candidates in process within the first few days, without compromising on the bar. Our last 3 hires averaged 17 days from submission to accepted offer.
We already have an in-house recruiter. Why use you?
Because the people you want usually aren't applying. Most of our clients already have founders, an internal talent team or both recruiting. We focus on the people they aren't reaching: we map the market and approach candidates who meet your real bar.
How much of the process do you own?
As much or as little as you need. At the simplest level, we source, qualify and close candidates. When we're embedded, we also help define profiles, calibrate pay, design interview processes, manage offers and advise founders on the close.
What if the search isn't working?
We tell you, fast. Because we map the market from the start, we can usually see whether the issue is sourcing, pay, location, the interview process or an unrealistic profile. We bring that data back and recalibrate instead of sending weaker candidates for weeks.
How do you charge?
We work retained, success-based or embedded, and agree everything upfront with no hidden fees. For individual searches, we offer retained or success-based terms. Higher-volume clients usually work with us embedded, for a monthly fee plus a reduced success fee. Placements are backed by a 60-day placement guarantee.
